Jason was born into a large, poverty-stricken, mining family. He didn't have very many aspirations for himself, and felt destined to die of the black lung like every other man in the area. He grew to resent his family, and blamed them for his lot in life, an attitude aided by his father's verbal and physical abuse. He often fantisized about killing them all in spectacularly gruesome ways and then doing despicable things to their corpses. His fantasies were soon to become reality as his powers began manifesting. An appropriate term would be psionic echo, but the tormented and horrified screams Jason fantasized about began to haunt his family, slowing driving them insane. His mother committed suicide and his father lost the tenuous hold on reality he was struggling to maintain for the family and began stalking through the house with an axe. Jason fled into the night. His slipped on some wet leaves and tumbled down a hill into the path of an oncoming car. He bounced off the bumper and the next thing he remembers is waking up in a nice bed with two middle-aged men standing over him. One of them, a doctor, told him to lie still, the other told him, to not worry, because he rescued boys like him. At the time, he didn't understand, and the pain medication quickly squashed any line of questioning he could have asked. The man took care of Jason, giving him his name, and paying for a quality education; in return, Jason didn't protest when the man climbed into his bed at night. When Magneto found Jason, he was sitting in a rapidly expanding pool of blood chuckling and murmuring softly. A razor blade in one hand and a corpse behind him, Jason had cloaked himself in the visage of his victim, a visage he further amalgamized with Magneto's own. He sequestered the disturbed young man, running a battery of tests and experiments on him and keeping him heavily medicated until he was stable enough to be introduced into the Brotherhood as Mastermind. His powers produce a chemical imbalance in his brain that make him increasingly erratic and unpredictable, Magneto supplies him with a drug that stabilizes this conditon. Despite his emotional and mental problems, Jason is an Oxford educated man who boasts a degree in English.
