At will, he can release them through his skin between the knuckles on each hand.

Origin/History
The first part of James Howlett's childhood was an unhappy one, spent in numerous hospitals and care facilities for injuries and illnesses. Since his parents were wealthy, they spared no expenses in his treatment. Unfortunately, due to their careers, they ended up ignoring James, so they dug into their deep pockets and hired a playmate/caretaker to keep him company. Soon after his 10th birthday, he met Rose, a 12 year old redheaded girl who'd reluctantly taken on the job. For the next few years, Rose and the gardener's son, nicknamed Dog, watched as James slowly became less and less sickly, eventually acting and playing around outside like a normal child. Close to his 12th birthday, James was sleeping after enjoying a surprise Saturday with both his parents and Rose at home when he was woken up by a slight noise down the hall. Startled, he found himself surrounded by dark men holding odd looking guns. The last thing James Howlett would ever see would be the boot of a large man connecting to his face because he wasn't going down as easily as they'd hoped.

The mutant now known as Logan woke up months later with no recollection of his past but with knowledge of how to disable alarms and that he was priviliged to be a member of a government agency known as Weapon X. A month later, he had a new past, though fuzzy and confusing, and he was introduced to another agent of Weapon X named Victor, who helped to train him and further hone the knowledge he woke up with. Because of the training sessions with Victor, Logan found himself having more free will and becoming more of his own person. For reasons Logan couldn't figure out, when Weapon X found out, they were upset and switched Victor with a new trainer. With Victor removed from Logan's life, Logan found himself falling back into the same, dull Weapon X programmed routine. Not that he cared, with regularly scheduled programming, he didn't mind and possibly even enjoyed it.

A month later, Logan was summoned to a routine examination to which he complied. When he woke up a few weeks later, his body was heavier than it had before. To his momentary surprise, he was told that his bone structure had been infused with a metal called adamantium and as a result, his training was going to get tougher. Weeks and then months gradually passed, and Logan found himself deeper involved with Weapon X, being allowed to go on mission when deemed worthy enough. Logan enjoyed the missions, as they were the only time he didn't feel like he was being overtly controlled. Ever since Victor's training sessions, he'd had nagging feelings in the back of his mind regarding Weapon X, though mind control sessions dimmed them to a low blur.

Weapon X, sensing Logan's growing distress with the organization, decided to send him to take care of the cause, the previously lost but now rediscovered Victor. After sending Logan in, they lost contact during a pitched and bloody battle. Ultimately, though, Victor won because while he'd learned and could change during the past two years, Logan had been stuck in Weapon X's methodical frame of mind. Once Victor'd taken out the squad that'd gone with Logan to assist if need be, he began to turn his attention to Logan. Subdued and thorougly sedated with enough tranquilizers to keep down a full grown bull rhino, the next few days were a mix of low-level and high-level pain as Victor poked and prodded around inside Logan's body looking for homing beacons. With Logan incapacitated, for some reason Victor decided to try and deprogram Logan, possibly to use as a weapon of his own against Weapon X.

At the age of 16, Logan went along with Victor as they joined forces with Magneto to help him with his solution to the mutant/human problem.
